I was so excited, so nervous, and full of jitters. I couldn’t stop moving the day before Gravel Camp.
Would it be a real gravel ride without a little hike-a-bike_ We started each day with a breakfast of champions thanks to our friends at Patagonia We owe a huge thank you to all our sponsors who hooked our campers up with amazing gear to get them gravel ready-we’d be stoked if we won a Roadrunner Bag too! There was a little apprehension about some folks first time riding off-road The weekend was HOT but we were still all-smiles, especially when Carmen broke out the ice-water cannon The weekend was a mix of on- and off- bike sessions with group rides to practice newfound skills Birthplace of Gravel Camp and the host of the Gravel Camp afterparty The Bradley Street Bicycle Co-op in New Haven, CT. Ripping down some dirt at the campsite to practice riding steep, loose gravel Riders watch and learn as they get comfortable on their bikes Riders practice the “ready position” in laps around the basketball court Our New Haven bike community showed up in force to keep mechanics on-hand at all times, but the bike gods were smiling on us because only one sag-wagon save was needed Our friends at Alpine Start kept us caffeinated and focused and had everyone wondering how instant coffee was so good Lydia teaches campers about derailleurs and shifting with our friends from REI Lydia talks us through the pros and cons of tubeless setups Lydia is an experienced mechanic from the city who shared their expertise with campers in several sessions throughout the day on Saturday Kai welcomes campers and sets the stage for the weekend Kai talks about body positioning for riding off-road Kai poses with her XS National Forest Explorer Kai helps a camper get set for descending practice Kai enjoying watermelon immediately after returning from a 30-mile gravel grinder Jesse sweeps the Trail Skills ride at Maltby lakes, just a short bike from the campsite Baby bike races are a tradition at the Bradley Street Bike Co-op.
